_______________________________________________________________________5. FREE SPEECH ISSUE OF THE MONTH
An article in the August issue of Vanity Fair magazine and a segment
on ABC's program 20/20 put forward the claim that in late 1992 an
individual named Philip Bloch had heard Mumia Abu-Jamal "indirectly"
confess to the 1981 killing of Philadelphia Police Officer Daniel
Faulkner. Jamal is currently the only political prisoner and working
journalist facing execution in the United States. He has been on Death
Row since 1982. His final appeal is before the U.S. Supreme Court. In the wake of this confession claim, there was a week-long frenzy of
media activity, particularly in Philadelphia, claiming that the case
was now settled and that Jamal should be executed. But as frequently
happens, mainstream journalists do not take the time to check sources
-- especially when those sources give testimony that the journalists
dont' want to hear.Shortly after the Vanity Fair article appeared, journalist and activist
C. Clark Kissinger wrote an article revealing that the author of the
Vanity Fair piece was a publicist for Philadelphia Mayor Ed Rendell,
who was the District Attorney at the time of Jamal's trial.Recently, Jamal sent Kissinger a letter he had received from Philip
Bloch months after Bloch now claims he heard Mumia confess, In this
letter, written in 1993, Bloch expresses his desire to see justice
done and his expectation that Mumia will be found innocent in a
new trial.Mumia referred to the Vanity Fair article and the ABC 20/20 report
as "snuff journalism."Why did Block wait until July of 1999 to report this alleged
"confession"? How does he account for the fact that months after he
allegedly heard the "confession" he wrote a letter confirming his
belief in Mumia's innocence. And why was Vanity Fair and 20/20 so
content to tell only one side of the story and surpress contradictory
evidence? As Mumia points out: not a single news organization that
ran with this story bothered to check it with him. So now thousands
of voices who want to tell the other side of the story are trying to
reach hundreds of thousands of people via email and web sites, while
the big time media can spread a slander to tens of millions of people
because of their broadcast reach. That's what they call "free speech."For more information, listen to Amy Goodman's Democracy Now coverage on
August 3 at http://www.webactive.com/pacifica/demnow.html, or read
FAIR's coverage at http://www.fair.org/activism/mumia-vanity-fair.html
