Date: Sat, 16 May 1998 15:54:26 +0100 From: mylene@waag.org Subject: Please Join the Transatlantic Information Exchange Service (TIES) On May 11th, in the framework of the EU-US Summit of London, the new Transatlantic Information Exchange Service (TIES) opened to the public (http://www.tiesnet.org). A presentation for EU and US Ambassadors, officials and journalists is organised by the Foreign Office at the European Representation in London on May 11th from 10am till 12am. TIES is a meta-website whose aim is to serve the development of civil society partnerships and cooperations between the EU and the USA. As TIES president, Franck BIANCHERI (President of Prometheus-Europe), puts it: "TIES is the first of its kind. TIES is pioneering technological and social engineering at the crossroads of three major trends of the next decades: - internet - transcontinental cooperation - civil society empowerment in international relations. TIES is opening a new way to buid "people to people" transcontinental cooperations; and it is opening it with the civil society actors themselves as TIES is implemented by dozens of associations, universities, foundations, ... .". Born in May 1997 at the "Bridging the Atlantic: People to People Conference" of Washington, TIES is currently supported financially by the USIA, the European Commission and the Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry. Since that date, the European Parliament as well as the European Presidency (with yesterday the Netherlands and Luxemburg, today the United Kingdom and tomorrow Austria) are also bringing a crucial support to the development of TIES. More Member-States intend to support TIES financially in the next weeks as well as several EU and US foundations and companies. TIES 98 budget is 680.000$ of which the USIA and the European Commission have contributed for 120.000$ each. Very concretely, as Nanette LEVINSON (Dean of American University), General Secretary of TIES, explains: "TIES is allowing associations, universities, schools, foundations, local authorities in the EU and in the US to build a transatlantic bridge of their own by getting access for free to information about: - where to find funds supporting EU-US cooperations (pubic and private) - which cooperations do already exist in their area of interest between the EU and the US - which are the potential partner organisations - what are the best practices concerning EU-US network management - How to use the new information technologies in order to build efficient and cheap EU/US cooperations? TIES may help deepening, at the civil society level, the EU and US relations." Marleen STIKKER (Director of the Society for Old and New Media), the TIES webdirector, underlines 'TIES constitutes a very advanced information and communication system enabling people to build communities. TIES is based on one of the first membership based databases. Its content is created by its members as they are responsible for their own entries'. The TIES website is located in Amsterdam (Netherlands) and developed by Society for Old and New Media and Digital City Amsterdam. It will have a mirror site in Grand Rapids (Michigan). TIES content is organised by sections (education, environment, seniors, ...) supported each of them by a working group gathering several EU and US organisations working in this very field. For its public launch in London, TIES will exhibit two projects developed by the Library of Congress with European partners, called 'Germans in America', and 'The Luxemburgers in America' which provide a first historical and cultural background to 'Family TIES'. This section will be fully developped for the next "EU-US 'People to People Conference' to be held in October 1998 in Vienna. With the support of other libraries and research institutions in Europe and the United States, TIES intend to develop similar virtual exhibitions for each EU Member-State. The artifacts of pop culture and the vast range of 20th century technological equipment form an almost unlimited source for the ironic style of his works. The visitors to this retrospective are heading for unfamiliar experiences with superficially familiar objects. Film sequences, advertising slogans, kitchen appliances, and last but not least familiar computer monitors are displaced from their usual context and are arranged in surprisingly novel ways that are highly imaginative. Perry Hoberman uses these objects as a starting point for developing totally new aesthetic systems of interrelations. In "Dead Space/Living Rooms", for example, film stills and fragments of sound tracks from long forgotten movies spring to life again as huge 3D projections. In the interactive installation "Faraday's Garden" the whole arsenal of electrical household equipment comprising mixers, shavers and fans turns into a kind of mechanical ballet. Starting up this kinetic sculpture follows a hidden pattern and takes the viewers in an almost ghostlike choreography through the room. Perry Hoberman is an absolute expert in handling the full potential of the new media in order to create representative new spaces for observation. In his works the haptic character of objects is placed in juxtaposition with the volatility of images. He contrasts the cold presentation of a virtual reality with imaginative dreams. In this way he expresses his comment on the euphoria of many progressive utopias in both a nostalgic and satiric way. ========================================================== EXHIBITION EVENTS - all events take place at 11 AM Sunday ---------------------------------------------------------- 14 June/12 July: Unexpected Obstacles - The Apparatus of Consumer Society: Lecture by Gabriele Blome 21 June/19 July Film Recycling - Film as an Artists' Material: Lecture by Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Schwarz 28 June/2 August Home of the Brave - Directed by Laurie Anderson - Film Screening 5 July/26 July Technology - Art - Pop: Lecture by Dr. Gerhard Blechinger ========================================================== CLOSING EVENTS - Saturday 15 August 1998 ---------------------------------------------------------- 17 PM Test Patterns: Video Works from New York presented by Perry Hoberman 20 PM Artist's Conversation in the Night Cafe: Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter Schwarz in conversation with Perry Hoberman ========================================================== ONLINE PROJECT opening 29 May 1998 Cathartic User Interface Worldwide go to: http://www.zkm.de/hoberman/ ========================================================== ZKM / Media Museum Wednesday-Saturday 12 AM - 8 PM Lorenzstr. 19 Sunday 10 AM - 6 PM 76135 Karlsruhe, Germany Monday/Tuesday closed Tel. 0721-8100 1200 admission 10 / 5 DM Fax. 0721-8100 1139 http://www.zkm.de/ ---------------------------------------------------------- Unexpected Obstacles is produced by ZKM Media Museum, Karlsruhe, Germany and Galleria Otso, Espoo, Finland ---------------------------------------------------------- ...................................4................... Date: Sun, 17 May 1998 20:29:38 +0100 From: Tommaso Tozzi <t.tozzi@ecn.org> Subject: global chat-conferences during Hack It 98 Hi, We are looking to start an IRC channel to realize a global chat-conferences during Hack It 98. The people in Florence will read (helped by a translator) it on a big screen. We have not still decide the date but it should be 5, 6 or 7 june in the night (italian time). We should be very happy if you will partecipate on-line. We are looking to close the program of events for Hack It 98, so, please, let me know as soon as possible if you agree Hack It 98 and if you'll partecipate in it. Best wishes Tommaso Tozzi ---------- Hack-It 98 Frequently Asked Questions ver. 1.0 - May, 14th, 1998 Getting started What is Hack-IT 98? Hack-IT 98 cannot be defined in one way only. It is an open-air festival, a meeting, a hacking party, a pause for reflection, an occasion of public learning, an act of rebellion and an exchange of ideas, experiences, dreams, utopias and love. What characterises Hack-IT 98 is our wish to live these three days completely self-organised basing ourselves on our needs. Hack-IT 98 is a SELF-ORGANISED event: there are neither organisers nor users, but only participants. Where? In Italy, in a squat in Florence named C.P.A. (Centro Popolare Autogestito, Popular Self-Organised Centre), Viale Giannotti 79, Florence. Tel and Fax ++ 39 55 6580151 When? On Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of June, 1998. If you wish and if you have time, you can join Hack-IT 98 several days before the starting date, in order to help organise the event, install the LAN and do whatever might be useful. How? How you wish! The C.P.A. offers a large area where you can pleasantly spend your days and nights during the meeting. There will be a self-organised camping site, so bring your tent and everything you might need. How much? Do you have to pay to participate to Hack-IT 98? Of course not. Hack-IT 98 is a no-profit event and nobody will make money out of it. In order to cover expenses we will organise a few concerts and other social events; to attend these a small fare will be requested. In the eventuality that the expenses should be too high, a small subscription fee will be requested to all participants. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Computers and other tools Will we have an Internet connection? The answer is almost certainly "yes". Although during Hack-IT 98 people are not meant to work on computers or to navigate on the net, we believe it is important to be connected at all times. We will thus activate an ISDN line connected to the Internet. Will we have a LAN? Yes! The LAN will be based on TCP/IP, we'll then build an 'intranet' during Hack-It 98. It is highly preferable to use RJ45 connectors to connect to the LAN, although there will also be a possibility to use BNC connectors. Will I have computers to work on? The answer doesn't depend on us. We can guarantee connectivity and the LAN, but have no idea of how many computers will be available. Bring your own computer (laptop or not!), your ethernet adapter, your hubs and so on. The LAN will be in continual progress! So please read these FAQ as often as you can, as the information will be continually updated. Can I bring my own computer? Of course! It would be an excellent idea if everyone interested in using a computer during Hack-IT 98 brings his own. Sheltered tables and rooms will be available. What else do I need? If you want to connect your computer to the LAN and to the net, you will surely need a LAN Adapter. If you don't have one, you can buy one for about 30$ in any computer shop. If you want to connect your laptop or your non-IBM computer, you will have to spend a little more. May I bring various electronic equipment? Of course! You can bring whatever you want: radios, pagers, radioscanners, toasters etc. etc. The more you bring with you, the more Hack-IT 98 will be fun :-) ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Logistics Where to sleep If you want to live the true atmosphere of Hack-IT 98, the C.P.A. offers a large area where you can place your tent or sleeping bag. A tent is not necessary but useful, both for your comfort and your privacy during the event. Unfortunately we are in a metropolitan area, so do not expect lawns and greenery. We will have to sleep on the hard cement! An inflatable mattress will allow you to go back home without a stiff neck! If all this is just too much, you can book a hotel, but it will cost you a lot more... A list of hotels will be posted later. Where to eat The C.P.A. is known for its good Italian cooking and good-looking cooks! You can eat well at the C.P.A. without spending a fortune. Special attention will be given to Vegetarians and Vegans. If you don't want to eat at the C.P.A., there are many restaurants, pizzerias, supermarkets and shops of every kind in the neighbourhood. Services WCs and showers will be installed for the event. How to get there Florence is - we think - a well-known place. The best way to reach it is by train, plane, bus or car (but not by boat!). Detailed information on how to reach the C.P.A. will be given later. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Programme Workshops and courses The backbone of Hack-IT 98 will be a series of self-organised workshops. Everybody can propose and carry out his own workshop. All we ask is that you inform us as soon as you can what your ideas and proposals are. A reminder: most of Hack-IT 98 will be in Italian. Two courses will introduce people not too skilled with computers in the correct environment of Hack-It 98 Courses in basic network technology For people with low skills in computer usage. The course will teach how to use the basic services offered by the most popular networks. Cryptography and anonimity on the networks For people with an average knowledge of network technology. The course wishes to show how to defend your privacy by using several techniques (cryptography, steganography, PGP, anonymous remailers etc). You can see a map of CPA. Weekend Counter Summit / Reclaim Europe! 12th - 14th of June - Invitation - In addition to other alternative events around the EU Summit in Cardiff, the counter summit was set up to meet the needs of campaigners affected by and/or campaigning on the EU. The weekend counter summit will offer the opportunity to international campaigners to meet, discuss and formulate strategies for a better Europe. The structure has been kept very simple. It aims to enable campaigners from a variety of backgrounds to meet with others in their particular field, as well as to hear and share experiences with people in other areas of campaigning. This format allows both issue-specific discussions and information exchanges between different fields. We hope this will satisfy everyone! * * * * * * Programme Reclaim Europe!
