Internet Society Italia expresses grave concern at the deactivation of the autistici.org domain by the Public Interest Registry (PIR), following the US government’s designation of Autistici/Inventati as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist (SDGT).
The designation of Autistici/Inventati was announced by the US Department of State in August 2026 (see Department of State announcement).
In a letter to PIR, the Internet Society, ICANN and EURALO, Internet Society Italia emphasises that, at present, there is no evidence to demonstrate Autistici/Inventati’s involvement in terrorist activities and raises a broader issue: the possibility that an Internet service provider could be penalised for the actions of its users or its political stances, to the extent of being excluded from the network without judicial oversight.
Internet Society Italia also highlights the global nature of the .org domain, considering it an essential resource for freedom of expression and association online, not subject to the decisions of any single government. The Italian chapter therefore calls on the Internet Society and PIR to develop adequate legal and structural safeguards to prevent similar cases, including by assessing the legal status of organisations and the protection of those involved in the management of the .org registry.
