<nettime> Threat to the Freedom of the Press in Europe | The Case of Netzpolitik |
Dear nettimers, the German government accuses the independent news website Netzpolitik.org of treason over leaks. It is a great threat to the Freedom of the Press in Europe, therefore we need to speak out. Below I am forwarding the *open letter* issued by *Jacob Appelbaum* and *Marie Gutbub* *soliciting solidarity*. Please join and spread the word. Here two articles from the Guardian if you have not heard about the case of Netzpolitik yet: http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/31/german-government-accuses-news-website-of-treason-over-leaks http://www.theguardian.com/world/2015/jul/31/germany-halts-treason-inquiry-journalists-surveillance-protests Kind regards, Krystian -------- Forwarded Message -------- Subject: Open letter Date: Mon, 03 Aug 2015 18:20:43 +0000 From: Marie Gutbub <marie.gutbub@systemli.org> To: kw@berlinergazette.de CC: Jacob Appelbaum <jacob@appelbaum.net> Dear Krystian, We are writing to you because there is a grave threat to the freedom of the press in Europe. The investigation into Netzpolitik is serious and requires a public statement from prominent members of the working press. The following statement is what we believe is reasonable and concise: "The investigation against Netzpolitik for treason and their unknown sources is an attack against the free press. Charges of treason against journalists performing their essential work is a violation of the fifth article of the German constitution. We demand an end to the investigation into Netzpolitik and their unknown sources." We would like your signature and any affiliation on this simple statement - will you sign it? If you have a suggestion for other journalists, editors or related workers who might also be interested in signing this statement as well, we'd love to hear the best way to contact them. Additionally, it would be wonderful to publish this in English and German in as many media outlets as possible. Would you be willing to publish it anywhere once we've finished collecting signatures?
