Re: <nettime> The $100bn Facebook question: Will capitalism survive 'value abundance'? |
Hi Ana --
The exchange fullfills the symbolical needs of giving and takings.
I believe you are missing a crucial concept here regarding gift or potlatch -- it *is not* nor *cannot be* symbolic or abstracted -- it is fundamentally about the real sharing of energy in some materialized form. It is about the localized sharing/equalizing of resources (abundance) so that clan/tribal viability is increased. It may be seen as a form of organismic homeostasis of self-organizing systems... Perhaps the big weakness of the 'exchange' of highly abstracted code that *is* Facebook is the fact that it does little to enhance viability (except in the 'attention economy' sense...)... jh -- ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ John Hopkins Watching the Tao rather than watching the Dow! http://neoscenes.net/ http://tech-no-mad.net/blog/ ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: http://mx.kein.org/mailman/listinfo/nettime-l # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime@kein.org
